The
'Villa romana del Casale'
About two miles far
from the center of the city, taking the public road that links Barrafranca to
Piazza Armerina, the most extraordinary example of the great Roman architecture
stands. The Villa Romana del Casale and its splendid mosaics. A monument for which
the city earned archaeological fame all over the world and that it constitutes
an unique testimony of the tastes and the habits of the Roman period. The Villa
goes up again to the beginning of the IV century and is divided in three great
complexes of salt, courtyards, thermal baths and peristyles. The most important
element of the complex is without doubt constituted by the mosaics floor: with
an extension (around 3.500 square meters) and a variety without equal in the world.
Mosaics representative the four seasons are particularly interesting, the Circo
Massimo, the Fatiche di Ercole and the famous Ragazze in Bikini; but also other
scenes like those of the hunting and fishing reach moments of sublime mosaic art. |
